OUR GOAL

“To leverage our significant expertise to drill or upgrade geothermal wells, providing direct and sustainable heating, which is affordable, sustainable and with minimal environmental impact”
— Bart Duijndam, Founder and CEO

A geothermal energy company.

85 Degrees is a geothermal energy company which brings together the best in class knowledge of drilling, geothermal and technical experience and know-how.

85 Degrees embraces the urgent need for energy transition and the carbon reduction targets set out by the Netherlands governments and the EU.

We are developing and delivering CO2 free energy in a third of the time it currently takes other players in the Netherlands’ market.

permitting in parallel.

We can work on the shortest possible timelines, because our team are experts in this business.  Once we acquire licenses and permits, we drill, then develop the distribution infrastructure.

Our approach to apply for permitting in parallel, as opposed to sequential is saving years on delivering CO2 reductions.

We develop projects immediately.

85 has supported an aggressive permitting strategy where we have applied for large permitting areas. This approach has led to several competing applications being issued for overlapping areas.

This strategy has forced other operators and stakeholders to apply for their envisioned projects without leaving them for years on the shelf.

Our message is clear.

The time for talking about CO2 reduction targets is over. It is now time to deliver.

85 has simultaneously acquired other existing projects which we are enhancing, upgrading and delivering.

We are commercially driven to consolidate, streamline and standardize the best practice in the industry. We actively engage in dialogue and technical discussion with other operators (Geothermie Nederland) to develop a safe and sustainable operating practice in liaison with the Dutch Government.

oil & gas drilling industry legacy.

Geothermal wells are still designed and operated with very significant input from oil and gas related companies. This legacy leads to oil and gas wells being used for geothermal production. The results of oil and gas drilling are well known and we at 85 believe there is relevant experience we can take from the oil and gas industry as to how to drill wells.

It must be pointed out that Geothermal produces heat energy from circulating water through an underground rock structure, extracting heat only. The oil and gas industries have extracted and burned the earth’s resources over the last period. Where the drilling industry has useful technology to offer we will listen and implement it.

immediate CO2 reductions.

Currently the Dutch geothermal sector offers the opportunity to unify and upgrade existing projects. This will result in immediate CO2 reductions.

We are confident that 85 Degrees can deliver continual new projects to the geothermal market in The Netherlands, and that we will still be running economically and profitably, long after the subsidies have finished.

Our operational excellence achieves:

  1. Delivery of CO2 reduction now.

  2. Economy of scale through industry standards.

  3. Consolidation of smaller operators and projects.

  4. Delivers fast track projects.

  5. Optimises sales of thermal energy at a sustainable market level

The company is in the process of raising €100 million to develop its existing sites, and to acquire and develop several further sites across the country.

We have active permit applications in process, they well underway and have been in process for more than 18 months.

clean, affordable, AND sustainable source of heat.

85 Degrees was founded by Bart Duijndam and Greg Thain in 2020 with the purpose of providing geothermal direct heating for three target sectors: agriculture, housing, and industry, all of which stand to significantly benefit from a clean, affordable, and sustainable source of heat.

The company has a significant addressable market, with the European heat and cooling market currently worth circa €540 billion.

How we do it.

85 Degrees plans to expand through both the identification and renovation of existing wells, and through the drilling of new wells.

Once our wells are active the heat produced will be sold through long-term offtake agreements with established partners.

low-pressure, low tech and low risk.

All our projects are low-pressure, low tech and low risk, and water based, meaning that alongside causing minimal visual disruption, there is negligible risk to local communities during the drilling or upgrading of well sites.

safety of all our projects is paramount.

85 Degrees is a member of European Geothermal Energy Council, becoming a member of; International Geothermal Association, Geothermie Nederland, & REA, and we work in strict compliance with all relevant norms and standards to ensure double layer protection inside the wells to ensure that the hot water from deep wells does not mix with groundwater.
