Frequently Asked Questions

Why launch a geothermal business now?

The Netherlands is behind on its carbon reduction targets and needs an array of low carbon emission heat and energy sources. Our projects also fit in to broader green energy investment plans across Europe, underpinned by the EU’s NECPs. Geothermal is already a proven heat source in the Netherlands and we have both the skills and existing infrastructure to make this project a success. There is also significant governmental support for Geothermal projects.

What is geothermal’s growth potential and how many countries might embrace it in Europe?

Geothermal is already well-established in mainland Europe, particularly in France, Italy, Germany, and Holland. There are currently over 130 operating installations, around 40 in development and over 120 in the planning phase – this means the number of operating plants could double in the next 5-8 years.

Do we really need geothermal? Wind and solar generated more of Europe’s energy than fossil fuels in 2020, why not focus on established technologies?

In order to achieve the Netherlands’ and the EU’s ambitious carbon reduction targets, we need a broad range of renewable technologies to work simultaneously. Once developed, sites require low-levels of maintenance and are not dependent on external factors (unlike solar and wind projects). Geothermal sites can also be located close to markets such as industrial areas and urban environments.
